With my job, I have the ability to be in many classes around Scioto county. Because of that, I see how different teachers implement technology in their classroom. From what I see, most schools do not use technology to its highest potential. When I interviewed the pre school teacher at Notre Dame Elementary School, she expressed that she only uses technology at nap time and to communicate with parents. She explained that she hadn’t tried to implement technology more into the classroom as a teaching tool because she did not have the resources. This is the trend I see with most preschools in Scioto county, and technology is not being used to its fullest extent in our area.
In my classroom someday, I want to use technology to benefit the student’s learning opportunities. When I think about my classroom, I see myself using the SAMR model to not only substitute technology but redefine the way I teach to implement technology in different aspects of my lessons. For example, young students could tell me about the story they are reading through a podcast instead of writing a summary. An example of the substitution aspect of SAMR would be the students taking notes online to make it easier for them. Something that I plan on doing to help communicate with parents is building a website that will not only help me communicate but will also be a tool to help the students learn to communicate online as well. I want to use technology in my classroom to be a way to help students learn material and teach them how to live in a technological society that is always changing.
I am sure there will be many challenges trying to implement this way of teaching since it is not the normal way to teach. There could be issues with the resources that my school has depending on where I teach. However, with technology advancing, I am sure most schools will have the resources I need to create a SAMR model classroom. I will have to incorporate the technology that different schools already have before I get there, which could also be challenging. Something else that I see being difficult is the fact that other teachers may have a different view of teaching and may try to influence me against how I want to teach my classroom. Those are the issues that I foresee, and I am sure there will be more that I must overcome as I teach. I will just have to be flexible and adapt to whatever comes my way in the future.
Most classrooms look like this one, where the technology includes a Smartboard and computers. I may have to use this technology in my classroom someday and make te most of what I have, or I could also teach in a school with technology such as iPads and Chrome Books.
